Donna Kelleher has been a holistic veterinarian and animal advocate for over 30 years. She wrote three books on holistic veterinary medicine. Her latest book, Zen and the Art of Caring for Pets was written to help both vets and pets in need. She uses acupuncture, NAET, herbal treatments to cure tough chronic cases rather than suppressing symptoms. Your dog, cat or horse can live a longer healthier life if you can adopt some of her strategies. The same minimally invasive philosophy applies to liberty horse training. #dogs #cats #horses #herbal #acupuncture #holistic #veterinary #holisticvet #holisticveterinarymedicine #tricktraining #horsetraining #libertyhorses
Solving horse problems with liberty training (how to make things fun and engaging for a horse!)
In this video, we learn Mick doesn’t want to go in the horse trailer. This video shows how we create a fun environment to show him going in the horse trailer is a great idea rather than punishing him for “misbehaving “ which is the usual approach. #horsetraining #horses #lovehorses #alternativehorsemanship #petdocdonna #mustangtraining

Natural Remedies for Constipation in Cats and prevention of Megacolon

Natural Remedies for Constipation in Cats. Fat cats are not healthy. They are more prone to diabetes (see previous YT video on holistic ways to manage) but they are also prone to constipation and megacolon. The first thing to do is change the diet. A carbohydrate rich diet may not be a good idea for these kitties. Chewing on raw bone as in a raw diet, keeping the cats a normal weight and giving...

Good Stuff
This is amazing! My horse doesn’t listen to me I think he doesn’t respect because I love on him too much.
Hi. Love in the horse world means rules and boundaries. That’s the way the herd works so that’s what they know
Hi. Well if you do clicker training then it’s pretty easy. I have videos on that. So first thing is to touch something where there is no grass. Then the horse picks something up then he brings it to you each time rewarding with click and treat. They learn fast.
I wish one day I could meet and learn so much from you
Aww. Where are you located? Want to host a liberty clinic? Thx for your comment!!
@ how does this work?
I am located for now in Germany. Unfortunately
Why is it that when you research the internet for natural flea treatments they show that almost anything you try to use is toxic to pets. I think the pet industry is dissinfoming us to keep buying their nasty chemicals and garbage foods.
Could be right but the reason could be liability. Right now vets worry more about essential oils and less about chemicals because the liability with the chemicals lies with the companies. Vets are off the hook. So it drives a lot of bias
What exactly constitutes "severe symptoms"? Please and thank you
Oh good question: severe symptoms standing in the corner and can’t get out. Appears to be blind. Can’t walk in a straight line and does not know who you are.
My dog has had staphylococcus pseudintermedius for a while now. The dermatologist we go to is unhelpful. Hes been on many different meds. We tried him on prescribed food for about a month. His hair is falling off and his skin is constantly red and irritated. What is the best option for getting him under control at the moment? How would one go about finding a good holistic vet? We've spent a big sum of money trying to cure him and are running out of recourses.
So everything in the video will help. Can you follow the specific diet in the PLE video on my channel? It’s like a bison and dark veg diet with calcium. You need to build the blood. Topical treatments twice a week shampoo with zymox perhaps no treats. Don’t give up.
Should B vitamins be added as well? Or is choline a type of B vitamin??? THANKS
Yes choline is a b vitamin. They are safe to add as well. (Water soluble)
@DrDonnaNaturopathicVet Awesome. Thank you so much for your reply. Just picked up KAL brand choline (250 mg) and hope to report back with good news on my 16.5 yr old shitzu mix. THANKS SO MUCH for this video.
Really great plant
So nice
Food is medicine. If people would understand that and act accordingly for themselfs and their pets I bet 60 or 70% of chronic health issues were gone. With conventional vets you already pay by entering the clinic and breathing in, very very often there are tests done or recommended, without you noticing as owner or asked beforehand mind you a injection is set, there are x-rays done or mrts, not all make sense in regard to the reason you came, and you are called in several times for follow up examinations just for the money, not for the health of the pet. Not to speak of the vaccinations, dewormers and other de...s, vets live of. And they always scare the pet owner with what could happen if they dont do whats recommend. I dont want all that at a holistic vets office. I like that my holistic vet dont look at the clock during the consultation like the conventional did because she had only 10 minutes per patient, I like that she first of all consoles and cuddles my dog before asking why we are there. And I am willing to pay a little extra for her time and knowledge and recommend her to everyone I know what brings in possible money too. I trust my holistic vet that an examination is neccessary if she says so because she explains reasonably, always questioned the conventional vet and rarely got satisfactory answers. I of course understand the economic needs to run a business and a life. The holistic and alternativly living people I know, including myself, are holistic in every regard and aspect what includes lifestyle and consumption too. I have very little money but always felt rich. All depends on your look on whats meaningful and significant in your life. Best wishes to you, WH
Yep
So many dogs have to be pulled or pushed inside the vet clinic, its a shame that owners think thats so funny they film it and put the videos on UA-cam. The dogs already smell in the parking lot the fear of the other animals and the antiseptics, they hear other dogs bark or even scream inside. Your clinic looks like a home, your attitude is very calm, unassuming and welcoming. My fearful dog would trust and like you and would walk in without long hesitation. What I would really like would be a video on your herb books and the books in your waiting room about holistic veterinary medicine. Thanks and best wishes, WH
Yes I agree
Thank you very much Donna. Does it matter what variety of pumpkin the seeds come from, e.g. Hokkaido or Nutmeg?
Not at all
@@DrDonnaNaturopathicVet Thank you! Isnt it deep a night right now were you are?
My boxer dog was put on cefaseptin. Hij would have to take 2x2 300gr daily. His stomac did not support the medicine. He got really sick from day one. After three days forcing him to eat, drink and take his pills, I had to stop. What to do now? My vet tried another antibiotic (synulox) by injecting it. He immediately reacted evenly bad by en puking, stomach aces and extreme lethargy. My vet says this infection needs to be treated several weeks. But after seeing him so ill, I'm almost sure it would kill him is I would proceed to finish a three (or more) weeke cure. I decided to take a rest so that his stomavh and intestines can calm down. The infection is a little better but not cured at all. Has any of you ever been in a similar situation? I couldneed some advice...
First of all. Can you watch this video so you know the options. Move to topical treatments and homemade food. Can you make sure it’s a cooked well balanced diet Clearly he is not handling the medication
Tysm for this, should I get mine checked out? It started off as a small bump, and then it kept getting bigger and bigger, and now it’s painful whenever we touch it
Always a good idea to get bumps checked out
Thank you for pointing out technical glitches! I am a vet not a computer person sorry! ua-cam.com/video/WfY0iqYe2iI/v-deo.html
use a human medicated shampoo
Human shampoos can be too harsh for some animals. Also if the diet is working there should be no dandruff
use selsun
Not a great idea. Better to find the cause. Usually it’s diet
Love the chef hats❤
Can I let my Cat with IBD eat backyard grass?
If your cat eats one blade of grass here and there and you have not sprayed your grass it’s ok. If he is acting like a cow out there it’s not a good idea. Also it’s a sign of IBD
You said the Yew plant is toxic and this is true. However, The flesh of the berries are not, but the seed inside the berry will stop your heart. There is no antidote if you accidentally eat the seed.
Good to know. Yew bark is medicinal but needs to be processed to be less toxic. You are right it can be toxic
I say “woah” and give my horse a little tight squeeze and he stops! Real equestrian there! 😂
It is very important as an equestrian to stay calm when your horse/pony sees something that scares them, because if you tense up, they will also. Horses listen to their rider's body language and can tell when you are nervous. Great advice.
You're right.
Has anyone used CBD for IBD
Good suggestion. If it’s a nervous related ibd it could help.
What you mean take out ribs
When they would remove the lipoma they removed the rib to get wide margins (not knowing if it was malignant or not). This is the way most vets remove lumps
"Why would I jump when I can walk up a ramp, crazy lady?" XD
It’s true but it’s more powerful when the horse makes that choice himself. This horse often refused the ramp too
This is a more complete idea as to what the training is all about: ua-cam.com/video/y3LtLuEgndY/v-deo.html
My dog was diagnosed with giardia and the said there was swelling and a mass and we’re now told he has lymphoma. We had a pathologist test it and they said it was so small they couldn’t say it was lymphoma for sure. He’s having problems pooping and losing some weight. I have ordered panacur to run through him and see if it helps. Looking for advice or help please any info is appreciated
Do you have a vet acupuncturist? Acupuncture is excellent at regulation through activating the nerves that control peristalsis. In addition herbs such as turkey rhubarb contain anthroquinones and also act to protect against cancer. If they are not sure it’s cancer that’s good. Also follow the diet recommendations in this video, in my cancer video and in my PLE video.
If I was a horse.. I'd prefer the ramp verses taking a step up
My mare would hop right in when I went in first and call her.

I need one of those
So do I!!
Apparently... Nothing.
My 1 year old cat has a staph infection. He's been on multiple antibiotics and ointments but it just keeps getting worse. He doesn't eat kibble or packaged food. We only give him home cooked meals including rice, pumpkin, potatoes, fish or chicken. Is there anything else we can do?
Most likely the diet is not balanced and as I said in the video you need to do a food trial. Chicken is the most common allergen. Wellness makes a single protein turkey canned food. If you listen to the video it might help. Protein problems are common and you need to learn how to manage them. Also such a young cat needs to go to the vet to rule out parasites
I always struggle with things like this, mainly because I'm mentally tired or not very creative with problem solving I'll get stuck in a problem seeing no way out
It’s okay. Happens to all of us! Just go back to what you do well and take baby steps

Hello, I have a client who was just diagnosed with canine PLE...I'd love for her to consult with you. How can we contact you?
Hi. Currently I am traveling and not doing consulting but that will change in the next 4 months. For now I have a diet in the video that works in most cases. Also getting acupuncture weekly is critical
I'm also giving Kona your tummy tea mixed with a little turkey bone broth before each meal
Hi. I would take all proteins away that are not her food
I'm also giving Kona your tummy tea mixed with a little turkey bone broth before each meal
What would you suggest for a dog who's already on marshmallow root powder and slippery elm, and rotating 3 proteins-- but still having slimy gelatinous stools?
There is still a sensitivity. Are you cooking for him or her? If so what is the exact diet?
I'm cooking raw meat for Kona, in a crock pot, rotating turkey, rabbit, and duck. She also gets green juju, probiotics, your recipe for vit/mineral mix, your anti- inflammatory mix. I've stopped all her other supplements for now.
Slippery elm can make the stools more gelatinous I believe. Maybe see if your vet can order a gut microbiome stool test to see what is gong on with her gut?
@don156 we just did exactly that! Waiting for results
Most recently, I learned that feeding them their raw diet cold, repeatedly, can set them up for food sensitivities. I have naturally reared dogs, weaned to raw, and raw Fed and good local organic vegetables/greens 5 years.. and all of a sudden things went sideways. There is always something we need to learn.
Hi. So I don’t exactly agree I hope you don’t mind but I will share what I think and you are welcome to disregard it. The purebred dogs are getting more and more allergies at younger ages. It’s actually something of an epidemic. I can do a video on this but are you familiar with the concept of a miasm? It’s genetic weakness that comes from generations of vaccinating and chemical exposure at young ages before maternal antibodies wane. This is what breeders have done now for generations so now the puppies are born with this miasm so they can manifest allergies even without early vaccines. It could be reversed I think but we would have to rear puppies to stay with mom for 3-4 months and wait to vaccinate until 11-12 weeks.
I’ll take that as additional insight , thank you! I definitely understand the effects of years of breeding habits/vax by many old school breeders. The good news is there are Naturally Rearing breeders out there that are building generations of much healthier dogs. Every generation away from the old standards is changing their health. I have Gen1 so there are still potential issues to show up. I have done a great deal to minimize issues, I just need to assess what is in front of me and adjust. My challenge is not having access to proper individuals that can assist/evaluate with me. Thank you for putting your videos up and for being available, you were one of the vets that I sought out because I live in Burlington and Bellingham wasn’t that far away, but unfortunately, you were not available when their issues surfaced. Thank you for still staying in the game and putting your information and insight and wisdom out here it is drastically needed.
I’ll add that I bred this litter and all puppies remained with the dam until 6 months old, and I retained two for myself that are now 5yrs old. I used Nosodes only. No chemicals, had been on that path with the mother for 6 years before breeding her, only one litter.
Dr. Donna. Where see you located? My dog is having symptoms of kidney disease. He's not eating very much at all today.
I just looked at your links and see you're in the Northwest somewhere. I'm in Houston texas. I wish I could find a holistic vet care to treat this little guy.
Can you go to www.ahvma.org. But get fluids now from the reg vet so that you have time to get in with a holistic vet.
My dog has a ball on his left leg and it's getting bigger and it's soft 5 year old pitbull
It’s good to get it checked at the vet locally.
Hi there Ive been wanting to make homemade heathy cat food but everytime I’ve searched forums the consensus is that cats have complicated needs and. We should all just buy commercial. People who go homemade route are often shamed for being called radical or cheap. I’d love to hear your thoughts and personal experience. (Of course no pressure or expectations on your end) Thank you for this vital info!
Homemade food is the best way to feed cats for sure but only if it’s balanced. In my experience with cats with chicken and fish oil allergies, we need to use homemade diets. People do not use enough taurine, calcium, B vitamins and other nutrients. But if balanced, these kitties thrive
Hi. Thx for your comment. I don’t know about it.
Thanks for the video on this subject. I have a diabetic cat and give 2 insulin injections a day and test several times a day. I use the herbs Ceylon cinnamon, along with Gymnema, and nettle but will try your suggestions! I also give him a load of other supplements, pulsing them, kelp and selenium, via b complex, magnesium, vitamin e amount others). The only thing that I have noticed that really made a huge difference was when I started giving him high copper foods daily, (clams, ox liver or squid. It was amazing, his blood glucose really regulated, but then he had some teeth out that was already scheduled in and since its been all over the place. I wanted to ask you if you have any thoughts on methylene blue. I know its controversial but I cant find any real evidence of that. I know there is plenty of discussion about it on pub med for instance but when you look you dont get to see the studies to see what actually might have caused what the problem. (It could have been way too high a dose, it could have been not a pure enough product (unless its really pharma pure that is high standard tested regularly {- sometimes they use a lesser grade on animals} - methylene blue often is full of heavy metal toxicity. My latest experiments on myself are with Methylene Blue. I’m using low dose and experiencing such incredible energy benefits I really wanted to try it on my cat. Mostly it comes up that methylene blue can give cats Heinz Body Haemolytic anaemia and this supposedly was due to the methylene blue in a urinary antiseptic. www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-E/part-500/subpart-B/section-500.27 I’ve also seen it said it was due to methylene blue being part of a cleaning/ disinfecting product , but I can’t find that ‘study’ now to show you. How do we know that the Heinz Body Hemolytic anaemia wasn’t caused by the heavy metals? I don’t know what grade they allow in pets but I have seen in some cases vet grades used are not the same as human grade pharma use (copper sulphate for instance). How do we know that it wasn’t caused by other agents in the antiseptic or disinfectant? How do we know the methylene blue wasn’t being sent (by the body) to the very place it was needed to try and heal the anaemia and was then blamed, (overly simplistic but you get the idea hopefully). It might well be that methylene blue does give cats Heinz Body Hemolytic anaemia but unless I can understand the hows, I lack trust in so many assumptions that are made in ‘science’ in general and particularly medicine. So often - one misguided study or idea get dramatized and repeated over and over until everyone parrots it and it becomes an assumed ‘truth’ when actually it's not at all. Googling it there are a couple of studies where intravenous methylene blue healed methemoglobinemia in cats without inducing Heinz body hemolytic anaemia. 1.5mg per Kg of body weight intravenously. I also saw a study like this where they also used oral follow up doses as well as the original intravenous dose of methylene blue, with no side effects. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1509670/ So if it really was a thing that it gave cats Heinz Body Hemolytic anemia, why did it not in this case when the cat was given the pharma grade methylene blue? I have a real feeling it could help my cat. I have given him 0.5 mg of methylene blue ( note just 0.5mg - not 0.5 per kg body weight) on two different days (with a day rest in between) and on these days his blood glucose was AMAZING. He has seemed really well. It could be a game changer - But of course I don’t want to be slowly poisoning him. Just wondered if you had any knowledge on this or thoughts.
I don’t know about methylene blue. I have not heard of it
I don't know much about horses, so I could be wrong here- But wouldn't using a whip be a bad thing? Horses have sensitive skin, that looks like it could really hurt them
We use whips as an extension of our arm! For an example: asking your horse to go to the left you would point the whip towards that shoulder and they would move off of it.
Hi. It’s all how the person has conditioned the horse. If the purpose has been to force or abuse the horse, then he will be afraid of them but my horses actually come to the whip because they have no negative association
@@DrDonnaNaturopathicVet aahh, okay, thank you for the clarification!
